Angie Markum

Board of Directors

Hamilton County
Ivy Academy

Angie Markum is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and began her teaching career in 1985 with the Hamilton County Department of Education as a secondary mathematics teacher. She is a veteran of the public school classroom and has taught every mathematics course offered for grades 6 – 12 for multiple years. She has communicated with legislators regularly about issues that adversely affect education within our state such as excessive testing, no allowances for special education students to take longer than four years to complete high school without it negatively affecting their school’s graduation rate, and about easing some certification restrictions so we may have increased career and technical opportunities for our students, to name a few.

She shifted to school administration in 2010 and shortly thereafter became executive director of one of Hamilton County’s two charter schools in 2011. During her time at Ivy Academy the school has undergone unprecedented growth, improvement and evidence of increased community support with a waiting list for every grade level. Through operating a charter school, she has become versed in non-profit board operations, board building, having a public constituency, and being subject to local government audit.

Angie was recognized as administrator of the year for east Tennessee by the Tennessee Environmental Education Association in 2015. Angie works with young adults and is a teacher in her church. She and her husband of over thirty years, Bill, reside in Hixson, Tennessee. They have three adult sons and one awesome cat.
