Teachers and Staff,

The KCS STEM Department will be hosting an UnConference at the L&N STEM Academy on October 12 from 9 to 12.  You are invited to attend and receive 3 hours of unscheduled in-service for your efforts!

An UnConference is a very simple, but extremely effective, form of professional development.  Rather than a fully scheduled event, an UnConference is led by the attendees.  We will build a schedule the night before and have the information available to you on Saturday morning.  Sometimes people have things they want to share.  Other times they want to learn something and invite others to come to the session for a discussion on how to make things happen.

During my first exposure to an UnConference, the district I was in at the time had just approved a new policy that would allow students to use cell phones in the classroom for school-related work.  I had no idea what that should look like in my middle school English class.  So, I requested an opportunity to discuss this and asked people who shared my same questions, or those who had already been through the process, to come and have a dialogue.  In all, we had 20 people show up.  I shared out a Google Doc and everyone helped take notes with questions that were asked and possible answers offered.  It was one of the best experiences I've ever had at a conference.

I participated in another UnConference this past summer at the DEN Summer Institute.  Another teacher wanted to share out her research on digital citizenship.  That seemed like a topic that could help us here at L&N, so I went.  It was just the two of us in attendance.  We sat and talked for 40 minutes.  She shared what she had, and we researched things together that were specific to our school.  It was an extremely valuable exchange.

If you would like to attend, you simply need to register.  There is a place on the registration form that will allow you to write down something you would like to talk about, or ask questions about, for the conference.  And if you just want to attend to learn a lot of great stuff, you can do that as well.
