* PET will not represent bus driver members in traffic court. In cases involving the operation of a motor vehicle, bus drivers are covered by the school system's fleet policy or their own vehicle insurance policy. Professional liability policies exclude the maintenance, operation, use, and loading and unloading of vehicles. However, our policy specifically covers driver education instructors, automotive CTE teachers, and educators supervising the loading and unloading of school buses.

Yes. Student memberships include the liability coverage you need as a student teacher. After you finish joining you will receive a confirmation email verifying your membership with your receipt attached.

No. Currently licensed classroom teachers employed by a school district must join as professional members.

You do not have to join a national organization in order to be a member of Professional Educators of Tennessee, so none of your dues go to a large national union – money collected is used for our goals here in Tennessee. We do NOT endorse candidates or donate to political fundraisers, campaigns or causes. We encourage our members to become politically active personally. Our registered lobbyists and members work effectively with ALL members of the Tennessee legislature and other elected officials. Our dues structure allows us to provide exactly what our members tell us they want and need most - and that does not include contributions to political parties or candidates.

If you are paying dues via payroll deduction, you need to notify both your district payroll department and the organization directly. Forms are available to download here:

Simply put, no. As a non-union professional educators’ association, our organization advances the profession by offering a modern approach to teacher representation and educational advocacy. We promote professionalism, collaboration and excellence without a partisan agenda. Our registered lobbyists and members work effectively with ALL members of the Tennessee legislature and other elected officials. Please see the Advocacy section of our website (www.proedtn.org) and our digital magazine TREND (www.tnTREND.com) for more information.

We welcome administrators to our family of professionals. Not only do they bring important and meaningful insight, they participate as members in the resolution of issues that are important to all Tennessee educators. Because administrators are first and foremost teachers, they understand the importance of teamwork in the Tennessee school environment. Most of our administrators “have the back” of their teachers, creating a supportive, productive, and creative learning environment. As educators, our valued administrators also need protection which Professional Educators of Tennessee and their legal team provide. We offer members $2 million in liability insurance coverage. Our legal staff is also available to address your employment-related issues or questions as they may arise. Our professional development includes TASL-accredited classes, and we provide timely updates on education law and issues.

Homeowners insurance will not cover professional or career-related liability. Often you may find the policy is only liability for “Bodily injury” or “Property Damage” and the endorsement merely extends the same coverage that your homeowners’ policy provides to your educational activities. This means that there is no professional liability insurance. The majority of cases we see actually involve employment rights issues, not liability issues. That includes actions or proceedings in the areas of dismissal, tenure, salary, leave of absence, assignment or other professional rights, duties and responsibilities, arising within the scope of your employment.

Homeowners insurance will not cover employment rights issues. We also defend you in criminal allegation arising out of your professional activities and represent you in all proceedings against you involving the issuance, suspension, cancellation or revocation any credential, life diploma or teacher certification. Only attorneys with training in school law will be able to adequately help you.
